Coca-Cola freestyle® dispensers are getting increasingly common at theme parks or restaurants, claiming to offer more than 100 drink choices. Refillable cups with an embedded UHF / RAIN RFID tag allow guests to purchase e.g. unlimited refills for the current day.
How do those machines work on the inside?
What data is actually written to the tag in the bottom of the cup?
Are the built-in security mechanisms sufficient to prevent from tampering with data?
This is mostly a foundation talk on ISO 18000-6C / UHF / EPC Gen 2 / RAIN RFID technology in the 860-960 MHz band - these are not NFC tags!
After initial deployments in the logistics and retail sector, RAIN RFID is recently being rolled out in many new areas. Meanwhile also battery-free sensors (e.g. temperature / humidity) or tags with a built-in LED are available.
